It is a fashion statement alright. To an untrained eye, men’s long coats would all look the same, just different in colors. However, through the eyes of an artist, it is a haven of designs. The designs are indeed more diverse than it appears to be.

If you haven’t the movie, “The Matrix” yet, don’t worry, you’d still be able to picture out what we’re talking about. For the ones who did, I’m sure you’re starting to realize now what I’ve realized before.  Almost all of the male characters of this movie would eventually wear long coats. Each of their long coats represent a distinctive design.

The main character, “Neo” wears a long coat that shows a merge in the classical designs with the modern ones. The classic design was quite simple since long coats were produced to be used for the use of the soldiers at war. It comes as a thick garment made from gabardine. The neckline is slightly higher intended to provide better protection from cold. The length goes as far as the slightly above the ankle.  They incorporated about 3 to four outside pockets and one or two chest pockets. On the other hand, the popular modern designs still has length that goes below the knee. From gabardine, modern long coats are now usually made of leather but not as thick as the old ones. The number of pockets have been reduced to just one or two outside and one in the chest. The matrix style of long coats indeed has a cooler effect. They made the upper body part fit enough just to draw the curves while the lower area is made a bit wider to give space for your legs to move. To make it even cooler, the designers of the outfit went for the open button look. This is a style of wearing the coat wherein you don’t close the buttons and just lets it hang from your body.

Some of the characters in the movie actually wore a more diverse design. A great combination of silk and leather and memory foam gave birth to what is termed as the typical Hollywood long coat. A shiny leather coat that is not as thick as before since they focus more on the design rather than its use. They applied a thin layer of memory foam underneath the coat which makes it comfortable and light. The memory foam also has properties that tends to mold itself to the shape of your body which is why modern designs would seem to look tight.

Men’s long coats are certainly a garment that would now fit in any occasion and any season. Some designs are totally new that seems to be a stranger from the old times. Others are modern with the combination of the classic effect while some still remains loyal to the old designs that keeps us cozy during cold weathers. Each one is different in its own way. Today long coats imply that men can still stay cool while expressing themselves in the modern fashion way.
